What Year Is It?

Before it gets to be February, I thought I had better post last year's holiday card. Below are some concept scribbles and process shots of the holiday card I illustrated last year. As always, it is absolutely free to subscribe to our yearly holiday card. Just private message me your address on Facebook and you'll be added to the list. Hope you are having a great New Year!

Holiday Card 2015

The holiday season is over. I guess it has been for a few weeks. But by now even the really lazy people should have taken down decorations and all that (says the lady who has her "Happy Halloween" decorations still up on her door). Anyway, here is 2015's holiday card. I wish I was on a beach somewhere warm right now.

One of my first rough concept sketches (John in a bikini)

Rough sketch. I kind of liked the look of this one (turns out John didn't like the bikini part)

Who Needs Chopsticks? Part 2

Hey, so after sleeping on it I decided I wanted to balance the composition a bit and add some color and ambiance. I added in some background detail with the lanterns and that inspired the color of the piece a bit. I feel a lot better about it now. It was also quite nice to pick up my brushes again as it has been a few months since I have used them. All in all, I'm pretty okay with how it turned out. Enjoy. All scanned and finished.

Family Time

I was at the park today and watching all the families walking along reminded me of me and my family walking around parks and the Chicago lake front as a kid. So that inspired this piece. Below I've posted all the iteration of the making of this piece. Enjoy!

Rough sketch drawn at the park. I roughly outlined my original lines in Photoshop since it was hard to see.

Roughing out more details before I start the final drawing.

Pencils.

Inked.

Final colored inks with some touch ups in Photoshop.

I guess I'll say a few more words. I actually don't like drawing characters of my family much, because I'm always afraid I'll get them wrong. So apologies to my family. I have very fond memories of all the trips to the parks we made growing up. I don't want this to get all emotional, so I'm done saying words now.

Two Quick Little Watercolors

So, for my birthday I got a Blick gift card, so I decided to use it to finally put together a little portable watercolor kit. It includes a small pocket watercolor sketchbook, a small portable watercolor pallette with watercolors, a tiny brush, and a tiny bottle of water. I put all of the supplies in a ziplock bag with a couple of napkins and I'm ready to go.

I've only done two little ditties, but I thought I'd share them with you.

This one I painted while looking into the vanity mirror above the passenger seat of John's car on the way to my parent's house.

I did this one while drawing a bath.

Sweet Dreams

This is me as Alice sleeping on the Cheshire cat. He's so comfy. I think I'll go take a nap now.
